You Need To Have the STCW 10 Basic Safety Training Certificate to Work On Yachts
To crew on a registered yacht anywhere in the world, you must be certified (130+ signatory countries) *. Depending on the position aboard, you must educated and successfully complete courses associated with specific certifications (aka. “tickets”). The most basic level of certification involves the course preperation and the successful passing of the testing associated with the STCW. The acronym STCW stands for, “Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping”.
*All professional mariners must be STCW 95 Compliant with the exception of U.S. mariners working exclusively on inland waters or domestic near coastal waters on vessels up to 200 gross tons waters. These crew members are exempt from the STCW requirements.
STCW 10, STCW 95 and STCW are used interchangeably within this site. The “95” is a reference to the year inwhich the Amendments were made to the original 1978 requirements mandated by the signature countries. As of 2003, all mariners must comply with the STCW 95 requirements. As of 2016, all mariners must comply with STCW 10.
