General Ships Knowledge (GSK) Course Provides an Introduction to Ship (Yacht) Operation Basics

This MCA course module addresses topics such as:

Ship construction, hull stresses and corrosion, transverse stability, reserve buoyancy and damage control, global and local meteorological effects, meteorological instruments and weather information, the principles for safe seamanship, watch keeping, preparation for sea and maintenance.

Pre-study:

This is an extensive 5 day course that requires students to do a fair amount of pre-study. We suggest that once students have enrolled, they should spend as much time as possible studying the pre-course package in order to fully grasp the terms and concepts of this course.

Pre-requisites:

  • Minimum Age of 19 years old
  • IYT MOY Limited OR RYA Yachtmaster

Course Description:

General Ships Knowledge (GSK) is divided into four sections:

  1. Ship Construction
  2. Stability
  3. Meteorology
  4. Seamanship

The following topics are covered:

  • Methods of yacht construction and local stresses due to static and dynamic loading
  • Bilge-pumping systems
  • Global and local meteorological effects
  • Meteorological instruments and weather information
  • The principles for safe navigational watch keeping
  • The functions of classification societies
  • Basic principles of hydrostatics and related terms
  • The concept of initial stability
