Revalidate your STCW-10 with Professional Yacht Training, USA (PYTUSA). PYTUSA is SE Florida’s provider for MCA-approved STCW-10 revalidation. PYTUSA offers one 1-day STCW-10 revalidation course a month.

Do You Qualify for the 1-Day Revalidation Course?

There is a good bit of confusion in the industry as to who qualifies for which revalidation for their STCW-10. Some students are required to complete the entire 5-day course again and some students are required to take a 3-day refresher. Still some students are eligible for a 1-day revalidation. Why?

Simply put, if your certificates have expiry dates on them, then you are required to complete those modules again.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) provides the framework for maritime safety, including the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention. Revalidation is a key aspect of the STCW system, ensuring that seafarers maintain the necessary skills, knowledge, and competence over time. Although the IMO sets general guidelines, specific revalidation requirements are implemented by national maritime authorities.

While the IMO sets the general framework for STCW revalidation, implementation and specifics vary across different countries’ maritime authorities. Seafarers should stay informed about their national regulations and follow the appropriate revalidation process to maintain their certificates. Regularly updating skills and meeting revalidation requirements is essential for ensuring maritime safety and career continuity.

Certificates that Require Revalidation:

  • Certificates of Competency (CoCs), such as those for Masters, Chief Mates, Officers, Engineers, etc.
  • Certificates of Proficiency (CoPs) in certain safety-related courses like Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Advanced Firefighting, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, Fast Rescue Boats, and others.

Revalidation Requirements:

  • Sea Service: For CoCs, typically 12 months of sea service within the last 5 years, or at least 3 months in the previous 6 months.
  • Refresher Training: For CoPs, completion of refresher courses in Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Fast Rescue Boats, and Advanced Firefighting every 5 years.
  • Medical Requirements: Valid ENG1 (or equivalent) medical certificate.
  • Professional Competency: For some certificates, demonstrating ongoing competency or taking revalidation courses might be necessary.

SAMSA STCW Revalidation Requirements

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) regulates maritime safety and certification in South Africa. Revalidation for SAMSA-issued STCW certificates typically involves the following:

  1. Certificates Requiring Revalidation:
  • Certificates of Competency (CoCs) for deck officers, engineers, and other licensed roles.
  • Certificates of Proficiency (CoPs) in safety and emergency training, such as Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Personal Survival Techniques, and others.
  1. Sea Service Requirements:
  • Generally, CoCs require proof of recent sea service for revalidation. This typically means having completed at least 12 months of sea service within the last 5 years.
  • Alternatively, some certificates may require completing additional courses or demonstrating competency in other ways if sufficient sea service is not available.
  1. Refresher Training:
  • For safety-related CoPs, SAMSA requires refresher training every 5 years. This includes courses such as Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Advanced Firefighting, and others.
  1. Medical Certificate:
  • A valid medical certificate, equivalent to the ENG1 standard, is needed for revalidation.

If you completed your original STCW in South Africa prior to 2021, it is likely that the certificates for all of the STCW modules completed have expiration dates on them. This will include your Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) and Elementary First Aid (EFA). If this is the case, reach out to the training provider attended and see if it is possible to have the certificates reprinted with a new expiration date, or without. If you are able to get the certificates reprinted with a new expiry date, you will be required to revalidate that certificate in another 5-years.

If it is not possible to have your certificates reprinted with new expiration dates, you will be required to complete the full STCW course. Book your STCW-10 Revalidation with PYTUSA to complete the necessary modules, good news is, you will only be required to complete the 1-day revalidation covering Basic Firefighting and Fire Prevention (BFF) and Personal Survival Techniques (PST) in 5-years time.

AMSA STCW Revalidation Requirements

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) oversees maritime certification and safety in Australia. AMSA’s revalidation requirements for STCW certificates include:

  1. Certificates Requiring Revalidation:
  • Certificates of Competency (CoCs) for officers, engineers, and other licensed roles.
  • Certificates of Proficiency (CoPs) for safety and training, such as Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, and others.
  1. Sea Service Requirements:
  • AMSA generally requires at least 12 months of sea service within the last 5 years for CoC revalidation.
  • Alternatively, completing approved revalidation training or an oral examination can satisfy the requirements for those without sufficient sea service.
  1. Refresher Training:
  • AMSA requires CoP refresher training every 5 years, similar to SAMSA, for courses like Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Advanced Firefighting, and others.
  1. Medical Certificate:
  • AMSA requires a valid medical certificate, similar to the ENG1 standard, for revalidation.

If you completed you original STCW in Australia, it is possible that the certificates for all of the STCW modules completed have expiration dates on them. If this is the case, you can reach out to the original training provider to get your certificates reprinted with a new expiry date or without, and if that is not possible then you must complete the entire STCW course. Book your STCW-10 Revalidation with PYTUSA to complete the necessary modules, but when you revalidate in 5-years time, you will only be required to complete the 1-day revalidation.
